A LOVE LETTER TO MYSELF

(I posted this on Facebook to console myself and friends who are weeping and asking me to have a drink with them. I am on everyone’s speed dial when they needed somebody to drink with. So tomorrow night I may be breaking my sobriety.)

Had a conversation/chat this morning about the grand scheme of things and we touched on Vico. I’m not a Pasig voter and I left Pasig after Ondoy. Many people are cancelling Vico Sotto for staying silent about Leni and all that. I think Leni knows where Vico stands. They even had a photo together when they met. She understands that Vico needs to be pragmatic. Vico’s concern is to clean the system first. It’s hard to work with a rotten system that’s why his first steps are: 1) remove all Eusebio’s henchmen in Pasig City Hall and make his slate of councilors win; 2) then once they’re singing one tune, they can clean from inside out.

Because change doesn’t happen overnight. It doesn’t start with one person. You attack the system. You clean the system, starting from the inside. This was demonstrated in the movie and real-life situation shown in the movie Spotlight. Marty Baron said, “You don’t start with individuals, you go after the system.” It’s long and arduous. But think about it, the rotten system we had been working with has been there for decades. It’s hard to break. But you know it’s the system that you have to break first.

If you want change, start with where you are. Small wins. Now I understand why Leni didn’t win. Based on the posts of Joey Salceda, Leni knows but it was worth a shot. That’s why she’s calm, Her face is open and bright. She didn’t concede first for us because we’re still hurting.

Just the same she didn’t use the pandemic to campaign and make herself look strong; she just quietly did her job. Many people said that’s one of Leni’s big faults; but she was being pragmatic. The country needed a functioning VP, not as President candidate, at that time. You see if she used the pandemic to make herself more prominent, no one would donate to the OVP since they would think she is just politicking. Bayanihan Konsulta was a success because people believed it wasn’t politics, just pure service.

We cannot fault Leni or the people behind the campaign for this loss. The Marcoses had been planning this for decades. Since 1992 when FVR allowed them to come back. FVR is a cousin of the Marcoses. We just started 5 months ago.

I believe in what Bishop Rey, Diocese of Imus said that God “sent Leni to make us realize that there is innate goodness in the Filipino…that God never meant for Leni to win. Her mission was to waken us up.”

God let the Romans invade Europe. You know why? He used a sinful Paul, a Roman, to be his instrument. So that Christianity can spread. And that’s what the Romans did. The Romans pillaged countries. They were “bad”. But that’s how God used the Romans to spread Christianity. He used Paul, who writes well and used Latin, the lingua franca of that time.

I think that’s how I’m looking at this tragedy. It’s hard to accept but if we work according to God’s timing, we will be better in the end.

The Philippines has to be brought down to its knees before it can build a truly clean and functional system and how we behave and how we treat our brethren while the country falls–that’s the challenge for us. That’s why the Rosas movement was formed to show us we can do so much in such as short time. What more if we have thought this through and planned it well—that we can be decent to one another and we can feed those who do not have anything at all.

Just think about it, no one went hungry in those Leni rallies. If we put that into a bigger movement, no one in the Philippines will go hungry while Marcos destroys the country. The enemy is dirty. Demon moves. If not Leni, there would be somebody else who can ride and play this game with the demons. Leni has showed us what we can do. Trust in God’s provident hands, all in His own timing.

I never thought I would see Makati filled with a million people with one color. I thought it will only be in 1983 and 1986—but in 5 months we were able to mobilize people. Singing one song. It’s like a miracle in this darkness, right? It doesn’t have to end with Leni. What we should do now is mobilize above-ground and underground movement—may above-ground ops, and black ops. It’s painful to say but this is the only way because these people don’t play fair. Just look at how they hijacked the elections. The odds were stacked against us.

Why did this happen? Maybe to give us food for thought? I don’t know. I’m still processing this. It’s like stream of consciousness.

Now people are thinking why did Edsa1986 fail? Just like what my mother said yesterday, we became complacent. We thought that’s the end all, and be all. No, it’s not. Freedom and democracy–it is an ongoing fight, you don’t keep your guard down.

We need to go through this so we can learn that change doesn’t start in the middle, but we include those who are in the fringes of the society. The work for change should be at the bottom and at the top and meet in the middle. To help and be with those who are in the fringes. Pedagogy of the Oppressed. It should not be “let me educate you.” But instead, let’s educate ourselves about the plight of those who were misinformed, who believed lies because they no longer had anything to believe in.

Grassroots movement, that’s where Leni and Chel Diokno came from. As long as all of us are not moving to help those who are in the bottom of the pyramid, we will always be like this. This is why Leni campaigned so hard in the provinces. It’s not only because she needs to win but to tell the people, hey we have not forgotten you.

She may not have won but at least she gave hope to those people that there is someone who will listen to them.

Now the challenge to me now is: am I listening to those at the bottom of the pyramid or my line is “let me educate you”?

PS. I wrote this so I can process things that I did not initially understand, not because I want to lecture people. I needed to understand so I can plot my next steps because I’m just starting with the role in this long battle.

In solidarity

Since I knew it’s going to be difficult with kids in tow, we opted to have a biking campaign around the village and UP campus.

Washing our bikes. Photo by CallMeCreation.com

First we washed our bikes and oiled them. We went to the vulcanizing shop and bike shop to change the interior tube of Twin A’s front wheel.

Something’s wrong with the gear shifter in Twin A’s bike so I’m going to have it replaced tomorrow before we bike to another venue.

We had dinner at Rodic’s near Bahay ng Alumni. Photo by CallMeCreation.com

We were looking for the street food vendor near Oblation but it was already very dark and we couldn’t see them. We proceeded to Rodic’s near Bahay ng Alumni and had a quick dinner. The ambulant vendor-kid there was appealing to us to buy his heavy rice-based snacks. I felt bad so I bought one and I gave it to the other kid who was begging for food. Then the vendor-kid gave me Leni stickers. I gave him more money in exchange for the stickers.

We went around the community this afternoon and evening with this.

Screencap of a video by a friend.

I wanted to be there but as a mother of asthmatic kids, I cannot compromise their health by contracting Covid. I hope they’re all safe.

Yesterday, National Artist for Music Ryan Cayabyab initiated a flash mob at PowerPlant Mall in Rockewell. I am loving that artists are lending their talent for Leni.

Enrollment

There.

I already paid for the girls’ school tuition this afternoon. Writing the check and handing that amount to the school cashier every May is always a leap of faith.

They will be having a hybrid setup where the children will be divided into batches: some kids will be physically in school on MW while the others are at home; then they will be at home for T-TH while the others will be in school. Thank you for small mercies like this because my kids are tired of online school. I would have been tired too if I were in their shoes.

I have also paid for their high school entrance exam review tonight. They will have the sessions starting June every weekday afternoon and by August through September they will be having it every Sunday, for 4 hrs every morning until noon.

Alongside that are their regular Kumon sessions.

Twin I complained that they already have too much on their plate. I told them that was nothing when I was their age. I had high school entrance exam review classes, Math tutorial, Sunday (Catholic Church) school, and Rondalla practices, piano lessons, and goodness knows what else. I rode public transport through all of these. I didn’t complain because it was expected of me and there’s this unspoken pressure that 1) must always be an honor student; 2) must pass UP high school and UP (college) or else I will fail my parents and bring them shame since my brother topped those exams; my older siblings always graduated with honors, if not valedictorian. I was not given a choice not to pass those exams. I was not given a choice not to be an honor student.

It was not an option.

My kids are luckier because they know I have a Plan B. My parents had no Plan B for me then. It was taboo. I was the only one among my siblings who didn’t take the Philippine Science High School exam because right off the bat I knew I will not pursue a science career. My other choice then was Philippine High School for the Arts but I was confused whether I would be pursuing theater then or creative writing so in the end I didn’t take the screenings, but I already had in my hand the application forms. In the end I just rested my entire future in one entrance exam and it was only now that I realized that I would have been truly fucked if I didn’t pass UP high. My mom said, just a few years ago, that she was confident that her children would pass. I just don’t know where she got the confidence that I would.

My kids are now pressured to choose what their career paths would be–Twin I came to me one night and told me she doesn’t know what high school track she should pursue. I told them they could be whatever they want. They wouldn’t know what they wanted to do in life even after they graduate from college. I told them some friends keep reinventing themselves 20 years after. So they shouldn’t lose their hair trying to figure out what they wanted to do because things change.

I was the rare person who knew at 16 what she wanted to do for the rest of her life. Twenty-six years after, I’m still doing it and I have no regrets.

This song by Sam Smith is so apt for me right now. I used to always downgrade myself, thinking that I didn’t deserve so and so things, this person, this…Blame it on low self-esteem growing up. It took me 40 years to realize that no, I’m not so bad after all. That I’m ok. Sometimes more than ok. If only I knew what I know now back when I was in my 20s, I could’ve saved me a lot of heartache and sorrow.

But then adulting is like that, isn’t it?

Have you ever felt like being somebody else?
Feeling like the mirror isn’t good for your health?
Every day I’m tryin’ not to hate myself
But lately, it’s not hurtin’ like it did before
Maybe I am learning how to love me moreIt used to burn
Every insult, every word
But it helped me learn (yeah)
Self-worth I had to earn
So I tried every night
To sit with sorrow
And eventually, it set me freeHave you ever felt like being somebody else?
Feeling like the mirror isn’t good for your health?
Every day I’m tryin’ not to hate myself
But lately, it’s not hurtin’ like it did before
Maybe I am learning how to love me moreJust a little bit (love me more)
Just a little bit (love me more)
Oh, no (love me more)
Just a little bit (love me more)I used to cry myself to sleep at night
I’d blame the sky when the mess was in my mind
I couldn’t see, I couldn’t breathe
So I sat with sorrow
And eventually, it set me freeHave you ever felt like being somebody else?
Feeling like the mirror isn’t good for your health?
(If you have, let me hear you right now)
Every day I’m tryin’ not to hate myself (yeah, yeah, yeah)
But lately, it’s not hurtin’ like it did before (sweet child)
Maybe I am learning how to love me moreJust a little bit (love me more)
Just a little bit (love me more)
Oh, I’m gonna try to (love me more)
With a little bit of love (love me more)Love me more
Love me more (just a little bit)
Love me more (love me more)
Love me moreOh, gonna love me more (gonna love me more)
Oh, gonna love me more (yeah, yeah, yeah)
Oh, gonna love me more (gonna love me more)
(Oh) oh, gonna love me more

The weekend is soon here. Saturday we will stick near our apartment because there will be a gigantic traffic jam as people will be gathering in Makati CBD, and the stage for the Leni x Kiko Grand Rally will be located at Ayala Ave cor Paseo de Roxas. I think this will attract one million people and will spill over to Edsa. The whole of Makati CBD will be clogged—there will be a domino effect so everything else is going to be frozen.

I wanted to go there, but my hotel reservations came a week earlier and I don’t have room in my budget this month for another staycation in the CBD area. My sister said it’s difficult to attend these rallies because you have no place to pee, it’s hot, and parking is a nightmare. My fear of Covid is winning over my FOMO (fear of missing out). My kids and I will just probably bike around with Leni x Kiko posters all over us.

And these text spams by Marcos? I fight back…

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! I enjoy trolling them.

A week away

A week from now, Filipinos will determine if we sink or rise from this disaster. I’m scared. I’m anxious but I’m hopeful.

The surveys that had been coming in are flawed. Several statisticians from UP and the former head of the National Statistics Coordination Board (NSCB, now part of the Philippine Statistics Administration) have already pointed out the methodology flaws of those surveys that they were structured to favor the class D which tended to favor Marcos.

Horror of horrors, in 7 out of the 17 regions, there are more registered voters for May 2022 than the population 18 years or over!!! The percentage of “over-registration” ranged from at least 1 percent to at most 11 percent. How on earth could this have happened?

Dr. Romulo Virola

Pulse Asia (PA) overrepresented those who did not reach college representing more than 78 percent of the PA sample and almost 70 percent of the PSA 2015 Census of Population and consequently underrepresented those who did:

Romulo Virola
Sampling bias by Pulse Asia, according to Dr. Virola

Meanwhile, I was arguing on Twitter with a Filipino journo based abroad for his crass words today. He has no idea what it is to be on the ground here. Now.

I can’t keep my words from flowing. The last time I couldn’t, I went viral on social media.

I was talking to my taxi driver this evening about Leni. Just one conversion is already a good one. Doing 10 conversions makes a world of difference.

Because I’m fighting for the future of my children. It’s not just for me or about me, unlike those people who are voting for Marcos who just say, I’m voting for him because I like him better than “lutang” (floating) Leni.

We are doing our best to change the mindset of the majority of the electorate who are not reached by social media and proper education.

Go mom! Photo by ArtCave

Here’s my mom yesterday talking to some rural folk somewhere in the middle of a farming community in the province, campaigning for Leni. Giving a talk and leading focus group discussions. There are millions of her doing this, volunteer on the ground campaigning, house-to-house visits to persuade people, correcting false information and propaganda.

Bills, bills,bills. Photo by CallMeCreation.com

It’s that time of the month again when I have to record/tally my expenses or trace where my money went. I always pay my credit cards in full every month. I don’t want consumer debt hanging over my head and I always make sure I have savings and petty cash for unexpected stuff like this:

Eyeglasses for us all. Photo by CallMeCreation.com

I lost my new eyeglasses. I don’t know where and how but I just couldn’t find it anymore. I had been wearing contact lenses the entire weekend and it’s only yesterday that I discovered my eyeglasses were missing.

Since I couldn’t live with wearing contacts full-time, I immediately went to my optometrist to have new eyeglasses made. I also had my girls’ and Ate C’s eyes checked. It’s not surprising they have astigmatism because of the amount of screen time we all had the past two years…so I had four pairs of eyeglasses made (Ooohh boy they’re not cheap!). Only Twin A’s were ready tonight and the rest will be picked up on Saturday because I ordered ultra thin lenses for us.

My girls will now join their four-eyed kuyas. 😁

Chasing each other with booger (eewww). Photo by CallMeCreation.com

My cats missed me. When we arrived home at 1:30 am today, my cats were all over me. Then they settled on my bed while I unpacked and searched all around for my missing eyeglasses. I slept at 4 am and I woke up at 9 am with my cats still in my bed. ❤️

Today Southeast Asia is dead: Eid’l Fitr celebrations across Southeast Asia while Vietnam celebrates its liberation with a holiday that began April 30 until tomorrow. I had been sending requests for interviews again and I think I have several lined up for this week.

I must finish writing three stories tomorrow. 😑

I haven’t had time to draw 😥

Pacific Ocean has gone nuts

Satellite image from NOAA

Who ever heard of two typhoons/tropical depression during summer??? I mean who could even imagine we would be having typhoons in the middle of what NORMALLY is a dry and hot (summer) season?!

The Pacific Ocean has gone nuts, because of climate change, the waters are getting warmer and we have off-season typhoons. Floods in the summer!!! Gee.

Map from Japan Meteorological Agency

Tropical storm Agaton is staying put in the Visayas area because instead of going westward, it’s being sucked by the bigger typhoon that is supposed to head to Japan. So now Cebu, Bohol, Leyte, and Samar are experiencing floods in the middle of the supposedly hottest month of the year.

Climate change, people. Typhoons should be coming in August, not April!

Cropping seasons have gone haywire now and the poor farmers are now left in such a quandary . It’s either they have to gamble on off-season planting or normal season planting but risk getting destroyed by weird typhoons.

On a selfish note, this could derail our diving plans. Any disturbance like this makes for choppy seas and difficult diving in Sombrero island and Maricaban island. It’s disappointing if it happens…now that my flippers and free diving ring buoy have arrived today.

It’s super comfortable! Photo by CallMeCreation.com

The girls exclaimed, Mommy, why is it so long? I said so I can propel myself better underwater.

Twin A: But mommy, you don’t really go deep.

Me: I can now, because you’re already grown up and I don’t have to constantly watch over you. Nanay and Tita S are also with us so I can leave you and do my own diving 😂

Inner tube and case of the diving donut. Photo by CallMeCreation.com

The official diving color of orange was no longer available, also the neon green. I only have pink, blue, and red to choose from so I have to go with the brightest color to serve as an early warning device as well. Having a diving buoy will save us a lot of oxygen when diving infront of the resort. It’s taxing when battling the waves going to your preferred spot.

And of course I needed a bag to house these extra long fins. It’s hard carrying fins without a bag when going up and down Anilao slopes.

Only Php 300! Wheee! Kimchi is more interested in the plastic bag. Photo by CallMeCreation.com

I’m so excited. I missed the sea so much. It used to be that every year we go to the beach at least once, even when the girls were still babies. Thank you, Covid, for delaying us. 😑

Meanwhile, there were unsubstantiated reports about tampered ballots in overseas Filipino voting.

I’ve asked SG-based Filipino friends if they have experienced this and most of them have yet to cast their votes. We’re still looking for Filipinos who have personally experienced this and evidence of tampered ballots as some members of local media are working on the story. The Marcoses are pulling all the stops. They’re getting worried about Leni.

SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga, Philippines — Within a week, Vice President Leni Robredo managed to stage massive shows of force in her supposed weak spots as a presidential candidate: Davao del Norte, a stronghold of the Dutertes; Pangasinan, a known Marcos bailiwick, and here in Pampanga, Arroyo country.

I’m supposed to do research and follow leads by reading news and now I’m caught in this fascinating story of Yohji Yamamoto, this avant garde fashion designer whose clothes I couldn’t understand but was considered tres chic. Vogue raved about him all the time. He is favored by a fashion journalist that I followed (Kitty Go). Whenever Commes des Garcons (Rei Kawakubo and eventually Junya Watanabe) are mentioned, not far behind is Yohiji Yamamoto, or vice versa.

I’m supposed to be sending emails now but here I am, buried in his story.

Yohji Yamamoto, from Wikipedia

And the Guevara family responded

I shared on FB the piece I wrote here yesterday and made it public. One of the family members thanked me for putting his family’s story to light and as of this moment this is being shared (now more than 450 likes and 390 shares).

Thank you, CallMeCreation.com, for sharing my family’s story. To add to this, we used to MANUFACTURE VolksWagen as well, long before China did. Take note: MANUFACTURE, not IMPORT. Sinira rin nina Marcos and his cronies yun. Not many are aware how much more damage Marcos caused while he was in power. Let us not let any of his children try to regain that. #MarcosNeverAgain#MarcosMagnanakaw

I knew about his family’s story because of one of my broadcasting courses. My father was also telling me about Radiowealth before. I remembered it when we retired that TV and replaced it with a Samsung, which was then a cheap copycat of Sony. But look at how South Korea grew into what it is now. Take note, we were very much ahead of S. Korea then. We could have been S. Korea now if not for Marcos’ greed.

As I mentioned here before, Manila was more modern than its neighbors before, with tranvias snaking Manila and neighboring towns. Escolta and other areas of Manila could be mistaken for any other cosmopolitan cities of Asia in the early late 19th to early 20th century.

It pains me that it’s only now that people learned about what I wrote about the Guevaras. Theirs is just one of the many devastating stories that the Marcoses produced.

But as Tricia Robredo–Leni’s medical doctor daughter–said, we should get out of our comfort zones and talk to communities, to those in the C,D, and E markets and tell them why this election is important. That they are just being misled to believe the lies by the Marcoses’ propaganda machinery. We shouldn’t be elitist and call those who are supporting BongBong Marcos as bobo (stupid); it was just their misfortune that the truth doesn’t reach them because we are confined to our echo chambers. As I said during my TV interview a few weeks ago, we are employing the wrong communication tactics to reach these low-income segments. Focused engagement at the grassroots level is the key and fact-checking shouldn’t be confined to online media because accessing information requires money. These low-income groups do not read newspapers because our periodicos are in English. It should reach TV and radio–the most accessible form of mass media that speak the poor’s language.

This is the role of journalists like me, put to light the truth that has long been buried by history revisionists. So people will learn and not commit the same mistakes. For people to take action.

Color swatch. Photo by CallMeCreation.com

I enjoyed making the color swatches here as I was able to test the brilliance/opaqueness/translucence of each color. The colors are easy to activate by minimal water. I can see why this is preferred by some manga artists. I’m looking forward to using this tonight. I feel giddy.

I can confine now the portable palette to urban sketching and use this for more serious coloring. I’m trying to do a Chinese botanical tonight but it’s kind of hard to finish the sketch.

Let’s see what I can do tonight.
