A nice break

Good morning. Photo by CallMeCreation.com

I fell asleep at 8 pm last night despite some asshole campers on the other side of the campsite blasting their odious music (as I mentioned yesterday) but it was a restless night because my girls were equally restless and were tossing and turning. Plus my back hurts from sleeping on the ground (sleeping bag isn’t thick enough for my spine). It rained during the night, I think, but we were dry inside and nary a drop of water could be felt even from the air vents.

In the morning when I heard the birds chirping, I flung the flaps open to see this:

I walked to the water’s edge to savor the early morning light.

We went to my mom’s cabin to have breakfast and after that we rented a boat to take us around Lake Caliraya.

We went around for an hour, which only covered a small portion of the lake. After the boat ride, I went back to the tent to take a nap while the girls went with their grandma to her cabin.

We checked out at 12 noon. Such a shame that the noisy campers were still there and didn’t leave earlier before us.

We weren’t able to go kayaking because I don’t trust myself when I don’t have enough sleep. It would have been a nice place to kayak because of the placid waters though.

Ditto for jet skiing. Swimming in the lake is not recommended because of the silt and clay that makes everything turbid.

Lake Caliraya is a man-made lake that used to be 1) farmland, 2) Caliraya river, and 3) a barangay (our boatman said). The Americans (during their occupation of the Philippines) sunk all those 3 things to create a dam on top of Sierra Madre to generate electricity.

It has long been a playground for the rich, bringing their jetskis and speedboats every weekend to this mountain hideaway. Some windsurf, kite board, and wake board here as the water in the area is placid compared to Anilao where you constantly battle with choppy waters.

If you want leisurely camping i.e. just relaxing-under-the-stars type of camping, then Lake Caliraya is perfect for that. No need to trek or anything of that sort. If bass fishing(or tilapia) is also your thing, then this lake is for you. Other water sports except diving is ok too (if you have enough money to rent equipment). Swimming though is… Not for the faint of heart.

Another thing, if you hate packing for camping, forget about it. You need to provide for everything. This campsite though has grilling stations, picnic tables, and shower and toilet areas.

This wonder car was able to pack three folding bikes, a tent, sleeping bags, bags, cooking implements, food, etc.

My girls and I enjoyed our stay here even though my back hurts like hell now.

Greenhills vs Lazada/Shopee

Since my Lenovo Miix 3 is already on its last legs, I had been spending hours at night scouring online marketplaces for a replacement laptop. Last Friday has proven to me that I shouldn’t delay this further because I went to the interview with a humongous laptop with me that I had to unplug from the back of my table and I wrestled with the peripherals that I had to disconnect so I can be mobile. When my Miix was still serviceable, it was just grab and go.

One of the laptops I was checking out was Lenovo Chromebook, mainly for its portability and battery life.

But the specs are really low-end and old, I doubted whether I would be productive given the lack of computing power.

Then I checked out Chuwi Aerobook because I am shallow since its form factor is imitating Macbook Air. However, the processors are old generation, that’s how they kept it somewhat affordable.

I figured I could get more decent specs for almost the same price. So I found Machenike, a Chinese brand of gaming laptop. The specs and price hit the sweet spot.

The only thing that made me hesitate is that it ships from China and the probability that some fuck ups will happen is very, very high. It’s too much of a risk. Another concern is the warranty. Although Lazada says it has local warranty, there is something dodgy about a vendor that says there is local warranty but does not publish where the local office is located. What if there are dead pixels? What if the keyboards are problematic? I could not find any other reviews about its reliability aside from those written on Lazada so that’s another red flag for me.

I searched for tablets bigger than 10″ since the one I’m going to replace is a Lenovo Windows tablet anyway, but most of them either have very old processors or keyboards are going to be an issue since some of them do not come with keyboards (unlike Lenovo Miix3). Chuwi tablets looked like they could be alternatives to Microsoft Surface hybrid tablets but again, I’m going to pay for old processors for the same price as a full laptop.

I was about to give up and succumb to ordering the Machenike laptop when I found the Lenovo Ideapad 3

This seems to be the best deal: Core i3 10th generation for less than PHP 25,000, even if you add RAM. Before pulling the trigger, I decided to go to Greenhills today to check out if I can buy it for the same price as those sold on Lazada. Because I have low EQ when it comes to important purchases, I am willing to shell out a little more instead of risking it getting lost or damaged by the courier.

Lo and behold, I was able to buy one from PCX in Greenhills for the same price, also with free mouse and bag. However, I settled for 128 GB ROM and paid cash so the price would stay under 25k.

It looks unsexy (kinda like the old IBM Thinkpads) and the body is all plastic (vs Chuwi Aerobook, which has a metal body like Macbook Air) but its battery life is around 6 hrs, around the same as or longer than that of Chuwi Aerobook or Ubook. Its innards are pretty standard, 8GB DDR4 2666 RAM, 128 GB SSD (can be expanded to make it hybrid) and everything else (screen, sounds, microhpne, etc) is not much of an issue for me since I will just use this for writing and editing on the go. It’s relatively lighter than the Acer gaming laptop that I hijacked from J that I’m using now as permanent desktop computer. It only weighs 1.6 kg, which is manageable and it won’t destroy my leather laptop bag that was just purchased right before the pandemic hit. I’ll just probably use the free laptop bag when I travel until I replace it with a better one that is roomy enough for a laptop and clothes that I can just chuck in the overhead bin of a plane because there are trips that only warrant a handcarry luggage. Just like the last overseas trip I had, which was like ages ago–Jakarta in July 2019, which was just under 48 hrs.

Overall I’m quite satisfied with the laptop’s performance. It can handle multitasking (messaging apps, multiple tabs of firefox, spotify, outlook, etc.) I cannot imagine running everything on only Celeron. The 10th gen Core i3 will be serviceable for at least 3 years; I’ll just add RAM or convert this into a Linux machine if this thing slows down. Even the Chuwi uses 6th gen Core i5 processors and they sell them at almost the same price as this Lenovo that I have. No wonder their laptops only get less than 5 hrs of battery life.

Anyway, face to face interviews are slowly picking up. This new laptop would soon be in service.

The end… New beginning

Globe still hasn’t gotten back to me. I already asked the bots to cancel my subscription. After several tries, their FM messenger bot told me:

For permanent disconnection, request should be coming from the account holder or authorized representative only. Also, if the account is still within the lock up period, there will be a pre-termination fee Php4,500.00 plus amount equivalent to two (2) months of your monthly subscription.

They give me crappy service ans I would still have to pay PHP 9,500 to end my relationship with them. 🤬

I know I’m past my lock-in period of 24 months since I’ve been here in this apartment for almost 3 yrs already. I’m still having this terminated. But no customer service rep is contacting me. My bill is still running 🤦🏻‍♀️

So yesterday, Converge finally arrived within 24 hrs of my application.

The installation is pretty smooth and I got my verrrry fast internet within the day.

I have no more excuse. My video calls and video streaming would be seamless. I can also stream HD videos from my side as well but I don’t have a 4k video camera so it doesn’t matter.

Meanwhile, I downgraded my Smart Postpaid plan after my lock-in period lapsed. I was entitled to have a new phone if I renewed my contract but I opted out since I don’t like my phone to be locked only to Smart because I use my Starhub SIM when I travel abroad. So I only got the SIM-only plan for 10 GB a month that can be rolled over. I never ran out of data for the month since I have internet at home so my data is rolled over and I get a total of 20GB a month. I saved PHP 500. Plus I get a free Netflix mobile subscription for the duration of my 2-yr contract with them. Haha! So now I have my own Netflix account that I don’t have to share with my girls.

Yep, I finally had the courage to watch Netflix again. And this time it’s The Way of the Househusband. 😂 It’s shallow, it’s comedy but I enjoy it.

I’m laughing again.

Retail therapy

To force myself to get back into the groove of working my butt off, I bought a new office chair from Ofix. It cheered me up a little bit today. I bought it on sale for 5k and was delivered to me today 3 days after ordering it from their online store.

New scratching chair for my cats 🤦🏻‍♀️.

It’s sturdier than the one I just replaced and the foam molds my butt. Thicker foam too. The gas lift doesn’t give way to my weight, which the older chair had been doing to me.

Goodbye, old chair. You now go to my yaya, who’s also attending online school.

Aside from the gas lift problem, the legs on this one got bendy so it’s tilted. I think one more weekend of him sitting on this would have done it in. It’s almost one month by this coming weekend since he sat on this…But it feels just like yesterday…

Anyway, I bought this gaming chair (it reclines up to 120 or 130 degrees) from Facebook Marketplace I think in May, for 3.5k. The good thing about this chair is that the fabric is holding up against the cats. Other than that, I regret buying this. Less than a month after I bought this, the reclining mechanism became wonky, it’s not locking. This made the back perpetually reclining.

This is a lesson for me: do not go cheap on yourself. You deserve better. No one else would buy it for you so go and treat yourself. Your 40+ year-old body will thank you.

When uninspired, we go to Pintô Art Museum

Just because. Sometimes we want fresh air. Sometimes we just want to be artsy fartsy.

Pintô (“door” in Tagalog) Art Museum sits on a two-hectare garden in a subdivision in Antipolo, Rizal. I’m sorry, I’m pretty useless when it comes to direction on how to take the public transport to get to the museum.

I’ve always encouraged the girls to appreciate art so when I have the energy, I bring them to museums like this one. The first time I brought them to Pintô was when they were three or four years old. I remember the exhausting moment when Twin A threw a tantrum and Twin B kept coming back to the wire sculpture of the “disappearing man.” They were also scared of the bulol (rice god) displays in the lower gallery

This also captured their eyes

The museum also has a lot of art installation and sculptures in the garden/outside the galleries. New buildings and gardens have been added in the years that followed after I first brought my girls there. Like this building below, which is reminiscent of an adobe house in Mexico.

The nice thing about Pintô, aside from the outdoor spaces, it has a lot of sitting areas. Like the ones below.

Last month when we went there, we were able to visit the newest and biggest gallery, Gallery 7.

My girl, Twin B, liked the Bamboo Forest art installation.

The first time I visited the Bamboo Forest room, I stayed there for a bit and soaked in the atmosphere. It was strangely peaceful. There were others who appreciated the artificially induced peace by meditating on the benches along the walls.

This painting struck me down. Because I love leather bags and shoes. 😩

Little free diving secret tucked in the middle of the metro

This photo is owned by callmecreation.com and can be found on Instagram

My kids had been bugging me about swimming or going to Anilao in the middle of the monsoon season. Harassed mommy went searching online for swimming pools other than in somebody else’s condo or Ace Water Spa (I don’t wanna deal with weekend crowd). It would be perfect if there are diving pools here in the city that are open to the public.

I thank thee, whoever put up Plunge Dive Club in Pasig. We now have a substitute for Anilao (albeit a very poor substitute). We have something to do on a weekend other than going to the mall. For P500 per head, my kids can swim and dive to their hearts’ content all day. And we can bring food too!

Bring your own gear (fins and snorkel set) or you can rent from the club. P300 for the snorkel set and fins.

It can be a bit crowded on weekends since survival and dive classes are held there. We just go there during off hours (which I won’t tell you 😏) so that we can enjoy our free diving sessions.

The pool is 4 ft to 16 ft deep. My girls can dive effortlessly up to 8 ft to retrieve the weights I throw at them to practice their free diving skills. I’m still training them to breathe better and equalize ear pressure when they go deep.

And it seems like it’s rare to see 8-year-old children free diving there. People were often gawking at my kids because they beat older swimmers. The lifeguard is entertained by them as well.

I like the place because they let you do your own stuff and not prissy about it. The bathrooms are clean but they are small. They provide lockers with no locks; you have to bring your own padlocks.

Free drinking water is provided via the water cooler that is accessible to everyone. They have tables and monobloc chairs for divers/swimmers where they can eat and rest.

It can dent my weekly budget but going there is better than hanging out in the mall or being glued to iPads on weekends. (Besides, I hate malls). It also burns calories. I just hate driving on a weekend though 😐

Plunge Dive Club is located at The Upper Deck, G/F Ortigas Technopoint Parking Building #1, Doña Julia Vargas Ave, Pasig, Metro Manila
