Better quality of life for less

This is exactly why we’re moving out of Metro Manila. This carmageddon will never end.

I am currently working now in my future bedroom, my laptop propped on a portable table. I have sketched a new layout for my flat and added the measurements of the Pax cabinets I will be ordering from Ikea for my wardrobe. I hear the wind agitating the trees, amid the relatively peaceful environment, and it makes these photos above more horrifying for me.

I will be driving through this Bedlam tonight.

This morning I walked under a drizzle to buy beef at a much cheaper price compared to those sold in supermarkets in Manila because 1) the cow that was butchered was under the university R&D and extension office i.e. it is not meant for commercial sale (she just happened to have an accident, like a broken leg so she had to be culled); 2) it was a milking cow (hybrid Holstein), part of the cattle that the university keeps under the Institute of Animal Science to produce dairy products under its extension program.

I rested for a bit so I can savor the feeling of being in the football field where I spent endless hours playing the sport that I once loved so much. It’s so peaceful. Photo by CallMeCreation.com

After expending 160 kcal from my early morning walk, I gained it back by having breakfast. LOL.

I started the day early and worked in a better mood than usual. Monday.

I’m romanticizing life here now because I’m not yet living here again full-time. But so far my stress and anger from last week had ebbed and my early morning walks helped a lot in regulating my mood.

To be continued…

Floating

We had our weekly call yesterday and I was trying to recall my leads that I got from the conferences last week…and OMG I really couldn’t say something coherent. My notes and my thoughts were all scattered because there were so many! I mean everyday I was talking non-stop from morning until evening and throughout all that, I couldn’t take down notes lest I scare or offend the person I was talking to. I had trained myself to be a walking encyclopedia but I guess age is catching up on me.

I just edited today and did some small admin stuff but the brain cells to write all the stories I needed to push out this week have died last week. I still don’t have the capacity to think lucidly because I am attending to a million things: poaching people, trying to interview candidates, emailing people I met last week, connecting my reporters to sources.

If I were going to a regular office, this would have been a lovely lunch bag for myself. I was tempted to buy my own but I knew if would just be a waste because I wouldn’t be using it.

I played truant later in the afternoon. At 3 pm I went to Raffles City to check out some bag styles on 50% off at Desigual there. Well, I didn’t like the ones that were left there so I went to Challenger to check out some things. And I saw some mechanical keyboards that are cheaper than Razer. I called up Twin A if she wants to replace the Royal Kludge that she bought because it has connectivity issues that I couldn’t resolve. Apparently it is a known bug according to Reddit; the 2.4G dongle doesn’t work well since it gets in conflict with other wireless devices. Anyway, Twin A said she’s happier with a membrane keyboard as she finds it easier to use when she’s playing Minecraft. Which is weird.

Of course, I cannot buy one twin without the other having the same. So I asked Twin I if she wants one as well because her cheap keyboard that she bought from Shopee is already falling apart. She says pass because she doesn’t have money. I said no, this is a gift from me because her keyboard and mouse are already not working properly. Yey, she exclaimed. She said she is happy with any keyboard that looks cute.

So there, I got one white and one pink and a pink Logitech Pebble mouse to match. Twin A already has her own new Logitech Pebble that she bought with her own money. Logitech lasts forever so better to pay premium for keyboards and mouse. My own Logitech slim keyboard and mouse combo (grey) are already a couple of years old. If I’m not mistaken, these are already 7 years old.

And I would be getting the Royal Kludge mechanical keyboard and try to solve the connectivity issues. I think I would buy new key caps because white will not remain white with my sweaty hands and obnoxious cats who love sitting/lying on my keyboards.

I went back to the office at 5:30 pm and continued to work while having my dinner at my desk. I got out of the office (the last person and I had to turn out the lights AGAIN) at around 8:45.

It was already too late to swim so I just stayed a bit at the pool area of the hotel.

Here’s the thing: I always book hotels with pools but I couldn’t find time do laps because I’m too busy. I just assure myself that I’m getting plenty of exercise with all the walking I do around here.

I started packing at 11 pm-ish. I finished past midnight. And I barely made it to the 30kg weight limit.

I’m hungry. Need to sleep this off.

🤕

I don’t know if I’m going to get sick or this is just exhaustion. I went home early after we wrapped up our 4-day conferences.

I wasn’t able to get a proper team photo so I just resorted to just doing a selfie.

I still have to go to the office tomorrow to finish some edits and articles.

I’m so tired but can’t sleep. Need to decompress.

I’m now finishing my editing backlog so I don’t have to revisit this next week. I still have to finish my own articles and heaven knows when I can sit down and rake my brain for functioning cells needed for writing. I’m waiting for my best friend and the girls who are watching the Red Velvet concert.

We left QC at around 1 pm and checked in at Hotel Jen – Shangri-la at 2 pm. Good that Shangri-la was able to improve the old Traders’ Hotel that was badly in need of an overhaul but you can already see the age of the building and its facilities.

At around 3 pm we met my best friend and her nephew (with the girlfriend). The couple went to Ikea and bff went with us and we had an early dinner while the girls attended their online review class.

My brain is already fried. I’m dead. I just want to have a 2-hr massage and a long bubble bath and tuck in between those sheets.

Oh. I have kids with me in that delicious-looking bed.

Because Saturdays

Because Saturdays are for bento and leftovers. Clockwise: leftover Century tuna recycled into sauteed tuna salad, thin scrambled eggs sliced into noodle strips, blanched salted spinach with sesame oil and seeds, and seasoned rice with dried seaweed. We didn’t go out today because I tried fixing and cleaning my six-year-old LG refrigerator. And it took all my energy and it knocked me out by 2:30 pm. It was leaking again so I guess one of the drain tubes got clogged again, same as last year. I tried contacting the repairman but he never responded. So I took matters into my own hands and tried to do what that guy told me to do when this happens again.

As of this hour it hasn’t leaked yet so yey for that. If my fix didn’t address the issue in the coming days, then I guess I have to make that trip to Anson’s in Cash and Carry Makati and buy that Hitachi fridge. If not the Panasonic one.

I need a bigger freezer since we make fridge cakes and ice cream at home.

I read in an FB group about money saving hacks that you can go to Anson’s in Cash and Carry to haggle the sticker price if you pay cash and if you ask nicely ( for a manager’s discount). I know enterprises need to push out inventory as fast as they could and if inventory doesn’t move in xx days/months, they’re losing money. The brands I’m going for are not as popular as Condura/Samsung/LG so I can try my luck. If I can bring it down by PHP 5,000 then I’m good.

Meanwhile, I also need to visit a paint center and check if I can match the color of my closets, which is close to between light blue and Tiffany Blue. Because cats. I patched the scratches with filler but that means I need to cover the wood-colored filler with paint. If I can’t match it, then I would have to sand everything, put a primer, and paint it with teal or light blue.

I’m keeping myself busy so I don’t live inside my head. It’s the most dangerous thing for me these days. If a raw nerve gets plucked, just like last week, it results into basura days.

The IATF has now allowed children above 5 years old to go outdoors but not in malls, restaurants, or any enclosed space. Which is the right thing to do because Indonesia is suffering the consequences of their lax rules.

We still can’t go back to Anilao because the danger of Taal Volcano spewing ash all over the province is high and it could happen any time. We’re waiting for the big one again, just like in January last year. Resorts in Anilao and elsewhere in Batangas had shut down. Right now we’re in Alert No. 3, some communities have already been evacuated.

I’m racking my brain with things that we can do so we don’t go stir crazy and the kids won’t be glued to their computers all the time. Camping is a bit iffy these days given the monsoon rains.

Weekends are for chores

If you’re a solo parent, weekends are made for chores and the thousand and one things that you should have done during the week but you were too busy to even have lunch on time.

Hotpot. Photo by CallMeCreation.com

So I finally got a few moments to cook and was able to do hotpot with beef strips, fish cake, fish tofu, and the last of the veggies in my fridge. It was so good; I missed having hotpot on weekends.

I went back to my old way of shopping for groceries. When we were in the old house, I used to do a fortnightly big shop at Hi-Top because it takes me at least an hour to finish shopping and it’s so tedious to keep doing this every weekend. Then I just top up in between by shopping for fresh produce at the wet market nearby so I just took the tricycle.

But since we moved to this apartment, I did my shopping weekly because two supermarkets are just walking distance from me. Plus I was feeding an army. Now that J is no longer here, I don’t need to shop for 10 boxes of milk, at least 2 dozens of eggs, etc every week. So now I just started doing one big shop every two weeks and just supplement it by buying fresh veggies from the vendors near UP every week. I want to have a chest freezer so I can stock up on a lot of meat and fish and cut down my trip to the supermarket or meat shop. The small size of my freezer is the reason why I always need to shop frequently. However, my apartment is small and I don’t know where I could fit a 4 cu ft of chest freezer or even a 3 cu ft one.

I realized that my grocery bill is cheaper at Puregold compared to Save More and Robinsons for the same amount of stuff I buy in all three supermarkets. They also carry more brands. The parking area, however, is very limited that I have to go shopping during odd hours.

After shopping tonight, I had the bike of one of my girls fixed because daughter A had her wheel punctured by a nail when they were biking at grandma’s.

Since it’s already GCQ, I think I can bring the girls (this time only one girl since the twin is still at grandma’s) to bike around. We need more exercise and time away from screens.

My other children are back to their obnoxious selves. Their square shaved parts (where they had their surgery) are still hairless, though.
