No long weekend 😑

Well, the Lunar New Year fell on a Sunday and the government neglected to declare a non-working holiday… so we had to leave for Manila during lunch time today.

I went out to buy my handmade shampoo bar and dishwashing liquid from the local weekend market. I also bought brunch for me and my twins… Not happy with our food 🙄 I should have stuck with the artisanal breads.

I also bought vegetables to bring with me to QC because I knew I wouldn’t have any time to spare to shop for veggies when I get home.

By the time we left my mom’s house, the traffic jam was already bad near the hot spring resort areas. This is a sign of what is to come this summer. 🤦‍♀️

Right now, I’m already racking my brain regarding the logistics of moving houses. I will be leaving mid-May and that is the height of traffic jams in this part of the world. I have to do the major move on a week day. If I do it on a weekend, my cargo truck will be stuck on the road for 5 hrs.

We went straight to Mitsukoshi in BGC to check out what’s there. Our main destination is Kinokuniya.

Checking out the manga on display. Photo by CallMeCreation.com

The girls got excited by the large selection of manga in Japanese and English.

I think their selection of manga and the number of aisles devoted to it is larger here than in Kinokuniya at Takashimaya in Singapore. Photo by CallMeCreation.com

My girls were crestfallen when they saw the price of each manga volume. 😁 So they’re just going to stick readinmg manga online.

As for the stationery… 🥱 That was a big disappointment. It was just the usual Fullybooked fare. I wish Loft or Maruzen would open a branch here.

But I did find a few stationery items outside Kinokuniya x Fullybooked, like Sailor fountain pens and other ink brands. They also carry Travelers Notebook refills but not the leather notebook covers. No Hobonichi as well.

We checked the accessories section and got stuck there. Well, the girls got stuck because they were overwhelmed with the earrings choices.

In the end it was only Twin I who bought earrings with her money in her Maya account. Twin A decided to save her money to prepare for the February Fair in my university hometown because they will be hanging out with their review center friends.

I finally found this umbrella brand. Wohoo! Photo by CallMeCreation.com

I bought my first Waterfront umbrella in Asakusa, Tokyo and I never took it out of my handbags. My current umbrella is almost six years old and is still going strong. It’s small, very lightweight, and yet sturdy. Perfect for sudden rainshowers in the city or when I travel abroad.

I didn’t find Prior by Shiseido in the cosmetics area. *sigh* I can’t even find it online.

We tried the food court but our choice was not a good one (Tenya) and we were not happy… again.

Cheese!

To make up for our disappointment in food and stationery, we went to Fresh, Mitsukoshi’s supermarket.

This time, we were satisfied with what we saw. And bought.

I finally was able to buy: light miso paste (a whole bag weighing 800g!) for less than PhP 200, dashi, bonito flakes, green tea powder, cooking sake, tsuyu for cold soba, and Japanese ramen that are cheaper than what are sold in SM and online.

And beer.

I wanted to buy one for each variant but it will be too heavy to carry to the car.

Because, why not? Photo by CallMeCreation.com

Next time I drop by here, I will take home with me the canned goods and seasonings ❤️ Mitsukoshi Manila is still on soft opening and only a few vendors and brands are still being carried. The food court is not yet SG Takashimaya-level in terms of choices but there is potential given that the department store itself is huge and it has sprawling gross floor space, unlike in Mitsukoshi Taipei where everything is crammed into small shelves, sacrificing the presentation of the merchadise. I don’t remember entering a Mitsukoshi in Tokyo so I can’t compare.

I’ll be cooking Japanese this week. 😁

All good planning came to nothing

We woke up late.

The sky was dark, like there would a big thunderstorm.

No Rizal trip.

But the rain did not come and it was already too late to go anywhere in Rizal, even in Antipolo.

We ended up in BGC again and the girls rented a bike to satisfy that itch to try this thing. What they initially wanted were the scooters but every scooter was taken so the girls had to content themselves with the bikes.

After that we ended up in Bonifacio High Street since the government announced that Metro Manila is now downgraded to Alert Level 2, which means the kids can be allowed to eat in restaurants. So that’s what happened.

We needed to walk off the calories so we strolled the length of High Street going the direction of McKinley. We crossed the Mind Museum.

After our early dinner, we walked towards Mind Museum and the girls tried the jeepney displayed at the lobby.

Then we had drinks at Coffee Bean & Tealeaf near Burgos Circle to end the day.

I didn’t want to end up in a commercial center again but what can I do? Oh well, next time I would go on a long drive on my own. Just to feel the wind on my face.

So tomorrow we get stuck again in the four corners of our apartment.

Sunlight. Photo by CallMeCreation.com

I spent the morning just bathing under the gentle sunlight streaming through my curtains. I decided I will not exert much effort since most of Asia is dead starting today. I just helped a colleague upload his story in the backend and that’s it.

It’s Lunar New Year’s eve today but unfortunately we couldn’t go to Chinatown to see the lion and dragon dance. But in years past I did that, visiting some Chinese-owned investment houses in the Binondo area to chat with some of their traders and taking photos for my news outfit’s social media account.

I remember punctuating the Lunar New Year with the Lantern Festival in Hong Kong with J in 2019. We had the lion dance inside our office and then after work J and I walked around Sai Ying Pun area at night.

My family is really not wholly ethnic Chinese so we really don’t celebrate it unlike some of my friends with Chinese or hispanized Chinese last names.

My mom told us that we’re Chinese on her father and mother’s side but the Chinese last name was already lost. It was common in Batangas (and also in some areas) for Chinese immigrants to adopt Tagalog or Spanish surnames to avoid discrimination. Since Batangas faces the West Philippine Sea (formerly South China Sea), some parts of the province like Nasugbu and Lemery were centers of trade with the Chinese and other Southeast Asian neighbors. So of course there were Chinese traders who wanted to emigrate to the area but I heard that Batangueños were pretty hostile to the Chinese. I don’t know if this is just some kind of legend but I was told that’s the reason why there are no native Batangueños with Chinese last names and most often than not, they had Tagalog last names (in our case, our last names are Spanish). On my father’s side, one Spanish ancestor was industrious enough to claim land “as far as his eyes can see” by fencing up tracts of land up to the mountain in our hometown. That’s how his forebears became rich (this story was reminiscent of the movie Far and Away).

Some unread books. Photo by CallMeCreation.com

I finally transferred my “books-to-read” for 2022 on my bookshelf that was once occupied by Gundams and then later by stuffed toys. I need to finish these books first before I buy more. Tsundoku in action. I now have all the things I love in my room: music, art, and books. Now I really don’t have any reason to venture out of my room. Hehe.

I was looking for activities or places we can go tomorrow but it seems like there are limited things we can do given that I have unvaccinated children with me.

I think we can visit the flower farm and Pililla Wind Farm tomorrow. The first and last time I was there was when J and I explored that area three years ago. We dined at the palaisdaan (fish farm) in Theresa, Rizal.

Mount Pugad camping is for another holiday…Probably during Holy Week. We need a longer holiday to be able to camp here.

I’m still figuring out the logistics. The ideal time to camp here is now, before the summer heat could kill us.

PMS craving and CNY plans

After visiting Quezon City Circle this afternoon to buy more flowers, I suddenly craved for spicy Korean chicken. But the parking area at Jjangkke was full so I had to go to the Korean mart near my apartment to satisfy my craving for something spicy without having to cook.

So instead I got myself spicy fish cakes and spicy egg rolls. Bought the girls gimbap and hopang. I then cooked tonkatsu ramen from my stash of Japanese groceries.

My PMS is fueling my cravings. I have to have that spicy chicken tomorrow. 🌶️

While we were at Yong Korean Mart, Twin I and I checked out new items in their shelves and saw this:

Peach oolong. Photo by CallMeCreation.com

I’ll try this Peach oolong next month after I get clearance from my doctor that I can take caffeinated drinks. My sleep hours are still messy and I had a horrible headache this lunch that I had to sleep it off.

Next week will be slow so the following days would be devoted to making the front of my house pretty. I can probably go to Dapitan for some garden accessories.

I have no idea what we will do this year while still under Alert level 3 (and unvaccinated children are still not allowed anywhere). For Chinese new year in 2020, we went to Rizal to visit Angono, Morong, and Tanay. Last year, we went to Binangonan to watch a beautiful sunset.

For this year perhaps we’ll just drive somewhere in Rizal, like Daranak Falls? The girls went spelunking and kayaking to reach the caves in their dad’s province last Christmas so hiking to the falls will not be a big deal.

I need to get out!
