Manpower issues

Oh geez, this tita can no longer keep up with the millennials. My friend B and I were convinced by the Filipino journo friends we had drinks with last Friday…to stay up past 3 am. I was so trashed the following day that I only got to do my grocery shopping at 3 pm.

Some local Pinoy and visiting journos.

There were so many conferences this past week, which allowed fellow Pinoy journos to gather in one place and exchange chismis. These were former Bloomberg TV Philippines/TV5/Businessworld people. One is an anchor/SEAsia reporter for CNBC, the other one is already a senior producer/editor/journo at CNA, and another is a Bloomberg reporter transferring now to their Jakarta office from Manila bureau. Others are from MSN and a commodities trade magazine.

We all had the same complaints: WE CANNOT HIRE IN SINGAPORE. ZERO TALENT.

Two of these people here I have already poached in the past. Of course they wouldn’t jump ship because they’re already the same level as me. The others are really meant for broadcast. So basically we’re all competing for a very small pool of unqualified locals because we’re all having problems with MoM barriers. What I found out is that they can go around the limitations by hiring at S-Pass levels and just hit the maximum payscale at that level so they can get people from abroad. Unfortunately, I cannot do that since 1) we’re an MNC so it’s harder for me because of reputational risks; 2) we’ve already hit our quota.

And of course, there is no way I can hire a local PR or citizen. For the PR, they are so much sought after that I cannot afford them. For the citizens…mehhhhhh. I will just kill myself by imposing this kind of headache if I hire local.

I told my bosses that there is no way I can fulfill London’s orders so I’m poaching from our HK bureau and sold SG so much to her. She’s flying in September to cover two conferences and if she likes it, I will facilitate her transfer. I can tell I will not be loved by the HK bureau chief/current manager.

I can also try poaching from our Australia bureau…

I’m keeping my fingers crossed.

I’m a coffee runner since the world began. For some reason my good friend G and my brother-and-SIL tandem like the local Gold Roast coffee here. So here I am, in danger of going overweight on my baggage.

The much needed foot reflexology. SO lovely. Photo by CallMeCreation.com

There is also a nearby reflexology place. This is the reason why I like staying in places like Lavender; neighborhoods like this have affordable options.

I fell asleep there while I had the 90 mins foot and back reflexology combo.

So my my good friend, who transferred here during the lockdowns of 2020, and I agreed to meet here so we can have nice talk amid the fireworks and the lights show. Her studio is a chaos right now because her mom and sister had been staying there for a week now or so. Plus of course, we wouldn’t be able to talk about sensitive stuff because they’re around.

With The Fullerton Hotel at the background.

She had been my best friend in elementary and I was always at their house because my piano teacher lived nearby. So every Saturday after my lessons, I walked over to her house to hang. We kind of drifted apart in second year high school because we thought we’re too cool for each other to hang out together. She joined the rich kids clique while I joined another popular kids clique. But we later realized it was stupid (teenagers…) We were still in each other’s lives though and all throughout our 32 years of friendship, we were always just a phone call away.

The view from the Singapore River walk.

It has been more than 5 years since we saw each other face-to-face but we talk almost everyday on FB Messenger that’s why it didn’t feel like we haven’t seen each other that long. I’m the one who knows EVERYTHING about her life post-separation from her husband. Like every graphic detail. LOL.

I’m helping her now find another law firm doing M&As here in SG because her current one sucks. It’s a local so no wonder.

It’s kind of funny. They have an oversupply of lawyers and bankers here while there is a dearth of journos since there is no free press here.

Ok, I must take a shower now and attend church at 10 am.

Miss CallMeCreation.com’s night out

Waiting for friends at Boat Quay.

Hah! After a very productive week, I finally had a relaxing night for socials. Despite feeling a little bit under the weather. I just discovered there is a little lounge room at the office that has an Osim massage chair that I enjoyed for a few mins before walking over to this pub. 😎

I took my time this morning and had a leisurely breakfast of kaya teh set at Kopitiam. I missed the softboiled eggs.

Fish skin chips. Photo by CallMeCreation.com

While I was buying takeaway lunch at the basement of Raffles Place, I saw these fish skin chips being sold at that Japanese resto. I was weighing whether I should buy now or before I leave on Tuesday. I decided against it so I just proceeded to our office to do some serious work.

My laptop can lay flat. I don’t have an external keyboard so this will do. Photo by CallMeCreation.com

I was so busy today that I ate lunch at my desk because I needed to finish my edits and a million emails.

Then I went to Suntec to meet a source. On the way back to the office, I got held up because there was a Delsey luggage sale. 🤣 Buying new luggage is one of my missions here in SG and just my luck I came across this store. The 55″ luggage I bought only costs SGD 164 (minus the GST because I will claim refund at the airport when I leave. My old American Tourister is already falling into pieces and I already had the wheels replaced in Manila.

It was still raining when I arrived at Raffles Place.

Back at the office, I had a lonely dinner at my desk because I needed to finish some tasks because that luggage shopping held me up by an hour 🤣.

And now I’m having a pint since my friends are taking quite a while to arrive. The rain. They’ve already forgotten how to navigate much worse thunderstorms in Manila.

It will be almost a week since I had taken my antidepressant. I’m doing good. ❤️

And the Ms Universe pageant begins

Going up Westin Singapore’s main ballroom. Photo by CallMeCreation.com

I was late. My room is so damn dark even if it’s already 7 am so I overslept. I have huge windows but it’s just one of the quirks of Singapore: it’s 7 am but it still feels like 6 am; it’s already 7:30 pm but it still feels like 5 pm and there is still daylight. 👀

So the conference already started when I arrived. Had to listen to the sessions because the topics being discussed are the same things that I write plus I needed to keep an eye on the big guys and network to death. And of course I got the big guys 😬

Fierce.

And as usual, my Malaysian colleague and I closed the open bar. We were chatting with a very jolly Indonesian real estate guy who works for a big conglomerate in his home country when another colleague of mine from the organizing team had to tap us to say they were already literally closing the venue 🤣.

I was walking out of the building complex where the conference was held when I called up my girls to check on them and the results of their midterm exams in their review sessions.

I looked really tired.

The twins said they sucked at Math and abstract reasoning. Errrm, I was good at abstract reasoning because of Tetris (and my older sister credits Tetris as well) so I told the girls to download the game and play it. Basically it’s logic and the game teaches you to flip images in your brain. I would have to help them review and quiz them when I get back home.

Meanwhile, my exhaustion today didn’t stop me from going to Maxwell.

Because I wanted to eat chicken rice from Tong Fong Fatt. It’s better than that overrated Tian Tian.

When the Maxwell Station (brown line) opens, it would be easier to go to Maxwell hawkers center and go food tripping.

I’m tired, I’m aching all over. I want a good bone cracking and muscle kneading session. 🤕💆

28 days without a car

Yup, it’s almost a month since I went out of my 4-km radius. To make matters worse, it has been raining so I couldn’t ride the bike to go anywhere. Physically yes, I can bike under the rain but I don’t want to risk getting sick before I am to leave the country for the first time since July 2019 (Jakarta).

I can last a month without seeing other people. 🤔 The introverted side of me is ok with that.

So today I’m just stuck here as usual and I’m cleaning out my refrigerator so I’m using the last bit of ingredients in my pantry before I do another big shop.

Tonkatsu rice bowl with egg. Photo by CallMeCreation.com

I made tonkatsu, which turned out good because I finally figured out how to do double frying as I’ve seen from Imamu’s Room Youtube channel. My kids loved it because it was crunchy and I seasoned the meat last night so the meat was savory. Since I don’t have mentsuyu to cook the pork with the egg, so I just made a runny sunny-side up fried egg to top my rice bowl. I paired this with miso soup with kombu.

For dinner, I made ramen and eggplant tempura and eggplant fritters.

I’m down to my last vegetable dish tomorrow (sauteed squash with string beans) and I’m thinking whether I should add coconut milk and a bit of chili flakes since I don’t have sambal. Oh, I should remember to buy sambal and bak kut teh spices when I shop in Singapore. (*Makes a mental note*) I should haul my ass out of this house tomorrow to shop for fresh veggies.

Cooking is some kind of stress-reliever for me—as long as I don’t have to do the wash up after.

Next year when it will just be the three of us, I would be batch cooking and probably supplement it by hiring my mom’s cook on weekends. (Ate C and I agreed that I would be releasing her from my employment and I will just finance her last year in college as my scholar with the usual monthly allowance, her tuition, and other school expenses. She would be staying with her sister until she finishes college. It’s just for a year). Imamu’s Room and Nami on Youtube have tutorials on how to prep bento lunches–packed meals for my girls and prepared lunches for me because I’m too busy with work to bother cooking during weekdays.

I will buy a robo-vacuum for daily cleaning and hire my mom’s bi-weekly cleaning lady for general cleaning during weekends. Besides, it wouldn’t be that hard to clean a 52-sqm apartment. The girls are already folding and putting away clean laundry as part of their daily chores and I would start them now with doing their own laundry with our automatic washing machine. How hard can it be?

The only thing that I dread doing starting next year is the daily litter box cleaning, because my critters are useless 🙄. When you are owned by a cat, you clean up after them for life. That is a fact.

Yup, I couldn’t lie on my bed because they have already commandeered it. I adjust 😂. Photo by CallMeCreation.com

We are in a scarier environment now with the China credit crunch unraveling further. While US economists/pundits are debating whether they are already in recession, China logs the slowest YoY growth in eons, registering 0.4% growth in 2Q22. Then here comes the threat of end-buyers/homebuyers not paying their loans because housing projects couldn’t proceed as real estate companies suffer from the Evergrande fallout.

China’s real estate sector is grappling with a crisis that has seen developers squeezed by eye-watering levels of debt, sparking a string of bond defaults among major groups including Shimao and China Evergrande — the world’s most indebted developer with about $300 billion in liabilities.

This is like the US subprime crisis of 2007-2008, just a different flavor and shown with subtitles.

When the world’s two largest economies are hobbling, then not far behind is probably the Great Financial Crisis 2.0. We are going to see a domino effect that could further weigh down emerging markets like ours, which are already suffering from sky-high prices of goods and services. I’ve been editing a number of stories that point to tightening of belts and external funding already coming in trickles. Soon the tap will be turned off for the time being as market chaos reigns. Huge valuation differences and forex issues (especially for the Philippines, which saw its currency weakening from 53 to 56 in just 30 days) are holding up deals.

This is a tough year; next year would be horrible.

I should move quickly and have my house up before December so if there is some kind of financial fuck-up that may happen, being homeless will be the least of my problems. I have logged a lot of paper losses from my investments and I’m kicking myself for not shifting my pure equity funds last year into fixed income because I was too lazy. I’ll just treat this market rout into a buying opportunity.

We should treat food insecurity with self-sufficiency and generosity. I will plant an edible garden and alongside that is encouraging people to do the same. A half kilo of minced meat and eggs with lots of vegetables go a long way for food-insecure families.

I’m holding everything with bated breath.

Back to school shopping

Bento brunch. Photo by CallMeCreation.com

Made bento brunch today because I wanted to make soybean paste soup with mushrooms and tofu. It goes well with rice balls, salted spinach with sesame oil, and chicken drummets.

Got the text message from the girls’ school that we could claim their school text books so we hopped into the car and off we went. Along with the books came the list of school supplies that we needed to buy.

Paying for our purchases. Photo by CallMeCreation.com

Then we went to the farthest SM we can go to: SM Mall of Asia in Pasay. Why the heck did we go there? Because this will be the last day we will have the car at our disposal because tomorrow I will bring this to the car shop for major body repairs and other mechanical repairs. I will have the radiator replaced with the bigger and thicker one, too.

Anyway, the girls and I bought new school bags and shoes that would go with their new school uniforms. They would be starting classes on the 11th of July and I guess I still don’t have the car by then.

All that shopping called for calories. The nearest restaurant with the shortest queue was Genki Sushi.

Since we had to maximize the diesel I wasted on this trip, I picked up a drawer, a saucepan (because the old one is already leaking), and some kitchen sink organizers from Ikea.

Ah, retail therapy. I have a love-hate relationship with you.

UPDATE:

It took me two hours to build this tiny drawer 😢

Appreciating my city

Quezon City Circle. Photo by CallMeCreation.com

It’s so cumbersome to be living in QC if most of your business is in Makati central business district. The travel time is hellish due to the mind-numbing traffic jam that is back to pre-covid horribleness. However, this is compensated by the fact that QC has more wide open public spaces with trees compared to surrounding cities and people do not have to go to malls to be able to access public spaces where they can bring their children.

My kids and I had bento brunch today c/o of moi because I wanted to eat maguro sashimi. I pan-seared the tuna’s surface but the inside is still raw. I like it that way, I don’t know why.

I took a nap after lunch because I slept late again last night. I had been tinkering with my older sister’s laptop that I wanted to convert into a Linux machine. Because I can.

An old Asus Vivobook. Photo by CallMeCreation.com

I cleaned its innards and checked if the RAM has an expansion slot. Nope, the RAM is onboard, thus, I would be limited to just 4GB. The keyboard is ghosting so I bought a replacement to make this serviceable. The keyboard would come from Shenzhen, China so I would have to wait for weeks before I could perform another surgery on this thing.

Why am I resurrecting an old laptop? I don’t know. Maybe because I can? It has always been a hobby of mine to tinker with old laptops and Frankenstein it. I used to dual-boot computers with Windows and Linux but it’s a bit cumbersome to partition SSDs or HDDs and run out of space over time so might as well have separate machines for the two OS. Why? Because I need to brush up on Linux every now and then and teach myself how to compile drivers or work my way around GitHub. Why? Because I’m bored? I want complications? I don’t know. It’s just my way of educating myself with stuff that 95% of the people here don’t bother with.

Anyway, enough about the laptop.

So this afternoon we’re back in QC Circle because I wanted to buy more plants and have a very lush container garden again.

Tadah! I have more plants on the floor of the passenger side. Photo by CallMeCreation.com

I let the girls roam free in the amusement park again and ride whatever they want with the budget I gave them.

It was a lovely afternoon and we took advantage of the sunshine that has been rare every afternoon this week. After I spent like PhP 500 on additional plants, I watched the afternoon go by on this concrete bench and waited for the the girls to run out of money.

I appreciate this city for having this Circle, UP Diliman, and LaMesa EcoPark (further up north near Fairview)—and other places I have yet to discover—so families can have affordable places where they can have picnics and have their kids run around safely. I could not imagine living in other cities and being stuck in a condo for months on end because of Covid lockdowns. I would have gone stir-crazy. Good thing I had the foresight and chose to live in QC still. I was thankful every time I could bike to UP campus in the evenings on unbearable days when I was still living inside my head and grieving.

Since we live near Maginhawa St, I am making sure we dine once a week in some of the restaurants here so we can try all of the things on offer before we leave this apartment next year. I’m going to miss this place even though last year it was painful to be still living here. Through sheer determination, I was able to exorcise J’s ghost and learned to love this home that I call mine. My apartment in my city where I’ve been living for almost 20 years.
