Good morning, welcome to my jungle and a coup on the other side of the world

Sick? Open your door for some fresh air. Photo by CallMeCreation.com

After a good night’s sleep, I was feeling a little bit better but I could still feel my cold is getting the better of me. I sunned myself for some Vit D while sipping my tea.

Now I’m feeling sleepy again. My girls will be fed by my mom at her house so I can have peace. Let’s see if I feel better after my catch-up sleep.

Just woke up with the girls on my bed. I don’t know how we had fitted on my queen bed but we managed. Oh well, when you don’t feel well, you always want mommy beside you to feel comforted. ❤️

My new water filter in action. Photo by CallMeCreation.com

Meanwhile, we had been using the new water filter for a week now and it’s so convenient! No more dragging of blue water containers from the gate, up my stairs, and hauling them up on my kitchen counter. It also freed up space on my counter and my dish drain now rests on where the blue water containers used to be.

Installation was a pain at first because my faucet has no groove at the mouth but there are several adapters that came with the system. So far we haven’t had any tummy problems. I must order extra cartridges for when the time comes the filter becomes blocked.

And here’s a coup.

As an international journalist, I must monitor this new development in Russia, a fluid story about the Wagner paramilitary group that has launched what it seemed to be a coup d’état. My subscription of NYT and Nikkei have now more use.

What are the economic and trade implications, we don’t know yet. On top of my mind are oil and gas prices. Inflation is still elevated in most parts of the world but this turmoil in Russia could trigger another round of price hikes as Russia is one of the biggest producers of fossil fuels.

Let’s see in the next two days.

Titan and the world; getting sick and would soon hibernate

And that’s the reality, folks. Some rich adventurers who dived into their doom get so much attention and support from the world and yet those who get lost in the sea because conditions back home are so bad that they risk dying in open sea don’t get help. Both tragedies happened at the same time.

Anyway, at this point there are no survivors since in theory their oxygen has run out hours ago. Hopefully, they didn’t have to suffer and it was instantaneous. I don’t know if it’s better to have gone when it imploded due to pressure or I die slowly and choke because I no longer have oxygen.

When I go freediving, I could already feel the pressure in my ears and we’re not even talking about several hundred feet…at 15 ft you could already feel it. At 375 atmospheres…

I think because this thing is so macabre that’s why the world is fascinated with this story. It’s like a well-publicized assisted suicide.

I don’t know how I feel about the whole thing. But the whole media circus touches the raw part of me that is scared of dark depths so it kind of creeps me out. My freediving is my way of confronting this fear but then, what is happening/happened to Titan is raising my fears again.

This is also like the feeling I got when I read Edgar Allan Poe’s The Cask of Amontillado.

UPDATE: It is instantaneous.

I was unproductive today. I wasn’t able to work because I just slept most of the day. I might have caught a nasty bug from Twin I, who in turn caught it from her younger cousin, L.

I will sleep for a few hours and let’s see what daylight brings later today. I was supposed to process yesterday at noon the conversation I had with L last Monday but I fell asleep as I was attempting to type it into an update of yesterday’s blog entry.

Hopefully, I would feel better later today.

No, I feel worse. It’s making editing today difficult because that job requires a lot of brain power. I’m brainless today. However, I need to go grocery shopping later tonight because my fridge is empty.

I’m too sick to do that either.

Since my fridge is empty and we’re too sick to go out for dinner or even collect FoodPanda or Grab at the gate, I resorted to making weird food out of stuff left in my house.

I think I’m going to have a fever later. Oh dear.

Provinciana is back in the city again

I looked harassed and tired, walking from one of the buildings along Ayala Ave to Glorietta where I parked.

We had an important meeting yesterday with an overseas executive who is visiting Manila. My colleague from the commercial team has been trying to woo this company and I think Kr and I nailed it.

Their BD guy is cute but I told Kr he might be young enough to be my son. I should just give him to L 🤣

Anyway, my sis-in-law hitched a ride with me and she went shopping at Glorietta while I went to this meeting and Kr and I worked on a story at the nearest Starbucks after that.

I knew going with my SIL is going to be destructive to my budget because I ended up here:

This is just a quarter of the beauty section of SM Makati. Photo by CallMeCreation.com

SM Makati has renovated the ground floor to dedicate the entire level to beauty products. I was supposed to buy a blouse or two as I need to refresh my business attire because I want people to take me seriously…but no, I ended up buying a perfume with my SIL because I always have trouble choosing scents. What smells good on paper samples or spritz from testers might not turn out to be the same once the perfume mixes with your sweat and skin. Perfumes react differently on people’s skins, which is usually the case with me—the scents react weirdly on my skin, that’s probably why my kids don’t like my perfumes. The annoying thing is that some of my perfumes are at least USD 100 🤦🏻‍♀️

Finally I was able to choose better this time becase I now have my SIL as a second nose.

As for shopping for clothes, that can still wait for another day. It was already late and some shops have already gotten ready for closing.

Perfume, day cream, facial wash (Japanese brand), clothes, jewelry…why do I even bother?!

It’s because I want to exude professionalism and just like in theater, I want to command stage presence, especially since I regularly meet top executives, government officials, and other high-profile people. I know people shouldn’t be judged by how they look and how they present themselves, but in business it does really matter and you have to play the game. So I can’t understand why some women keep on dressing up to show off their boobs to do business. I want my executives to look at my face, specifically into my eyes, when I talk and not at my boobs.

But ok fine, if showing off your boobs makes you feel beautiful and confident, then so be it. But I cannot assure you that the other side would take you seriously, especially men. Or wait, women are more judgmental towards fellow women. That’s why a former reporter friend of ours who keeps dressing provocatively gets written off by others. I know it’s harsh but in my opinion there is a time and place for dressing provocatively. I don’t know, it’s just the Asian in me speaking.

And they did cut me off

When I went out late this afternoon for some errands, I realized that Smart’s threat of cutting off my service came true. I didn’t have data so I couldn’t check emails and MS Teams messages. Damn.

So when I got back home, I paid the partial amount they were charging me. I refuse to pay the whole amount; not until I get the breakdown of why I incurred those charges.

These guys…🤦🏻‍♀️

I just spent an hour of mindless bingeing on Iron Chef Dad on Youtube. Yes, I remember Susur Lee in Food Network’s show, Iron Chef. I think he’s part of the batch that included Bobby Flay.

I was fascinated with Susur Lee’s interaction with his son in these videos and with how he can transform junk food into gourmet ones.

I’ll try this rice cooker chicken.

I swear, I will buy that Japanese rice cooker that sings. 🤣

Ever since I was a child, I had been a fan of cooking shows like Wok With Yan in the 1980s, Cooking It Up With Nora (Daza) in the late 1980s to 1990s, and all the cooking shows in The Food Network. The only thing I watched on cable before were The Food Network, HGTV, The Asian Food Channel, and NHK World.

This is probably the reason why I can cook. My mom tried her best to cook for us but she’s a better scientist than a cook and she knows it 🤣. Her brother told us he was her guinea pig when they were living in an apartment in Manila when he was still a student and my mom was already teaching at Arellano University. Oh the concoctions she came up with!!! So my kitchen education did not come from my mom; I learned how to cook in school because we had a comprehensive home economics program in high school. And of course, those cooking shows are a big help.

When we were moving our stuff from QC, my sisters and my contractor were shocked to see that half of the things I brought were kitchen items or are related to food. I’m still not done yet; I will still have to buy myself a new slow cooker because I have yet to make this 18-hr tonkotsu broth for ramen. It needs a slow cooker because using Instant Pot for that would drive my electricity bill to greater heights.

Yes, that’s my holy grail, the perfect tonkotsu ramen.

The provinciana went to the city

All of them looked unhappy. Photo by CallMeCreation.com

So what did I learn today? Some reporters told me that the freaking breakdowns in NAIA are actually a form of sabotage. Some dark forces are pushing Transportation Sec. Jimmy Bautista out of office because they are after his chair. Imagine, you can have all the kickbacks in the world, in true Marcosian fashion. For example, this unsolicited proposal to rehab NAIA is worth PHP 267bn—even a small fraction of that is already a huge kickback.

It’s because Jimmy Bautista (or we call him JJB) came from the private sector so his propensity for corruption is less. He was also part of the consortium that wants to rehabilitate NAIA and as the former CEO of PAL, he knows how much of a headache NAIA is for airlines. In all of my interviews with him, he never said that the NAIA rehab will not push through…it’s just there are other hands that are pulling strings… the Finance dept is favoring the Bulacan Airport of San Miguel. People behind the scenes are trying their best to sabotage NAIA so Bulacan Airport or Sangley Airport would no longer have to compete with the primary gateway.

But I certainly would not want to drive all the way north to fly abroad from Bulacan.

I trust the reporters—they have good sources.

Some friends like L attended the presscon, so finishing articles was a bit of a challenge because we always end up talking and talking, laughing, and crying. By past 5 pm, we called it quits and no freaking story is worth being left behind at the hotel.

And I get more fuck ups

I got a warning from Smart that they would be cutting off my service because my bill is running over the 3k limit and that I need to pay the almost 5k running balance in three days. Like whuuutt???

I called them up, complained to customer support rep that I pay my bills regularly and I am never late. She couldn’t get into the breakdown of why incurred almost 5k worth of charges. I said I won’t be paying until I get to the bottom of this.

Then I remembered to ask if dialing toll-free numbers of let’s say Philippine Airlines could trigger that kind of spike? The agent said 1-800 numbers aren’t toll free on Smart if you’re roaming.

Fuck it. It’s all PAL’s fault again. I needed to call PAL last Friday because I couldn’t understand what they were doing, like booking me to a flight with a duration of 24.5 hrs…and the customer support even put me on hold 🤦🏻‍♀️

I have complained to the top corp comm officer of Smart and told him that they have an idiotic billing system; they also lack transparency.

Sending my laundry down photo by CallMeCreation.com

So I tried the pulley system that my contractor installed for me to handle my laundry and groceries. It’s hard going up and down my stairs while carrying heavy stuff.

This is one side of my utility area. Photo by CallMeCreation.com

The water pressure pump has its own pedestal there made of steel. They’re just doing the final touches on the electrical because the house next door will be installing a power gen set that would kick off when Meralco fucks up.

Another corner where my washing machine will be installed.

My girls and I went to church for the first time in a very long time. They usually go with their aunt/my SIL and cousins. I just attend online service via Zoom because I tune in to the Singapore branch, not the local one, which six to seven years ago hurt me so much because of the pastor’s misogynistic judgment.

I’ll write about it one day.

After church, my girls went browsing in a craft store and a gift shop but it was me who ended up buying something. 🤦🏻‍♀️

We went to the commercial area outside the uni campus. I saw this from one of the gift shops there and purchased it. It’s Spirited Away, my favorite movie of all time. Photo by CallMeCreation.com

I wanted to try the chicken wings place that my older sister was telling me about, where she brought my girls when I wasn’t at home. We bought one pound of the wings to go and I cooked white rice for the girls while I made kimchi fried rice out of leftover rice from this morning. I need to finish the kimchi in my fridge because my girls didn’t touch it while I was away—of course they don’t like kimchi.
