Of beaches, crocodiles, and sharks

For some reason, my online news readings before I went to sleep last night brought me to crocs in Cancun, Mexico and how the resorts are somewhat hush-hush about these reptiles because these would destroy its tourist appeal. How ironic that Cancun is being marketed as a beach escape when you cannot freely swim even in its shallow waters because it is teeming with saltwater crocs.

That prompted me to go back to researching about my greatest fears in the sea: crocs and sharks.

Crocs used to be found all over the Philippines. Even the creek in my hometown was host to the smaller endemic species before and even after WW2 and they swim towards Laguna Lake and then to Pasig River to Manila Bay. The biggest croc recorded was found in Laguna Lake in the town of Jala-jala.

In 1823, a huge saltwater crocodile was killed near the town of Jalajala in Laguna de Bay. It measured 27 feet from the tip of its snout to the end of its tail. Approximately weighing 2 tonnes, this giant croc was said to be as heavy as a bull hippo. Too big was its size that it actually required the help of 40 men to bring its body ashore. Upon dissecting, people were shocked to discover a body of a horse cut in 7 pieces. –Filipiknow.net

Jose Rizal, in his novel Noli Me Tangere, wrote about crocs along the banks of Pasig River.

They’re now hunted down to extinction in this area or degradation of habitats also caused the disappearance of these reptiles.

When I was in Palawan back in 2012 (or was it 2013?), I remember being paranoid about encountering crocs in the shallow waters beside Microtel in Puerto Princesa City. It used to be a mangrove area that was thinned out by developers. The endemic Philippine crocodile and the more aggressive Saltwater crocs lurk in mangroves.

But that didn’t keep me from wading into the waters. But I discovered that Puerto Princesa is the last place in Palawan where you want to hang out because there are hundreds of other better beaches in the province. You can hop to several islands in one day around Honda Bay.

Diving though is not good in Puerto Princesa and nearby islands because Honda Bay has suffered from years of dynamite fishing. It is only now that the corals have started to regenerate.

I can’t remember if I was using a digital or film underwater camera. Sombrero island in Anilao had better corals and fish. Photo by CallMeCreation.com

And to further bolster my fear, the Crocodile Farm has shown me how big saltwater crocs can be—making me more paranoid.

But I learned that the saltwater crocs and the smaller and endemic Philippine croc are normally found in the less inhabited areas of Palawan like Balabac group of islands (nearer Malaysia) or in Mindoro. Both Palawan and Mindoro islands host rare and varied flora and fauna as they have evolved a bit differently from mainland Luzon. My ecologist mom said Palawan was connected to Borneo thus it’s more similar to the group of islands in that part of Malaysia and Indonesia than the rest of the Philippines.

Anyway, back to crocs, the Philippine croc, Crocodylus mindorensis, is named after Mindoro where it is still found today.

Mindoro waters are also shark-infested, they said. Mindoro is just a breath away from Batangas.

But then shark attacks are rare in the Philippines compared to other countries. My sisters and cousin had been surfing in Baler, Aurora before and later they were flabbergasted to learn that there are great white sharks in Aurora.

If not for my fear of these creatures, I could have been more fearless in freediving in Bohol and Palawan. But then my fears are somewhat unfounded because of the facts I stated above. What is more fearsome are the currents or riptides that have killed more divers than sharks. My sister was caught in one and she almost died when she was diving in Australia.

All this walking down the memory lane is making me yearn more for the sea.

A little bit of leeway for me

I’ve come to dread Mondays since January. Today, however, was a bit easier for me ever since I told my boss I need to go easy on the hiring. If they start harping on it again, then I have to say something that they don’t want to hear.

Meanwhile, I was able to book 3 days, 2 night stay in a hotel in Ortigas for the Holy Week. I decided to do a staycation for that long weekend to 1) get away from this apartment for a bit; and 2) celebrate the twins’ birthday in advance. We can cool off in the pool without getting stuck in traffic because Metro Manila will flush out the rest of humanity during these dates. Good luck to everyone who will attempt to go out of town during the Holy Week. May the odds be in your favor. 😂

Once I’m settled in my new house after mid-May, damn it, I will go diving again. All my disposable income had been funneled into my tiny house and I have deprived myself of beach vacations for months.

My last dive, which wasn’t that great. Photo by Twin A.

I would love to bring the girls to Palawan before they start 7th Grade in their new school. I’ll just use my miles to shave off the cost of their plane tickets. I have a high school classmate who runs her Coron tours in which you can wake up to a new island every morning for a week. Or I can do a DIY island hopping for me and my girls.

Change of scenery

Mission accomplished. I finally applied for water connection this morning and the utility company’s engineering team went to my house in the afternoon to arrange the right of way issues. Once that’s out of the way by tomorrow and after I paid for the connection fee and bond, my house will be connected to the mains.

Now, next on the agenda is Converge connection. I already told their corp comm head about my intention to transfer my account from here in QC to my new house. HOWEVER, I still can’t do it because I’m still using my line here. Oh well, let’s see how that could that be arranged…

After the darkness of my current bathroom, my new bathroom seems very bright. My current water heater is still perfectly fine so I will pull it out of this apartment and transfer it here instead of buying a new one.

Cleaning up the floor tile.

I opted to keep the original tiles, to mimic Vigan tiles of the old houses there. Plus these are very durable so I don’t need to worry about dinging it–or worse, cracking it–like when you have the shiny porcelain ones. The girls’ loft beds will arrive on the 22nd so hopefully by then I will have an idea of how much space will be left for the storage system I will be buying from Ikea for their room.

Only a few days more before the kitchen cabinets are done.

They will start with the welding works next week so this house will be inaccessible for quite a bit since they will remove the old staircase and manufacture a new industrial- sttength one. After that, I can start moving the books and the kitchen stuff that we don’t normally use.

After finishing a call and uploading one digest for publication, I walked around for a bit at 5 pm to buy my girls cookies from my favorite pastry shop and hopped to Infinitea. Then I went to the university park for some air and to drink my milk tea in peace.

My sis-in-law later joined me here and we talked until 8 pm, which was a good time to drive back north (1.5 hrs). The change of scenery has done me good, in the sense that I feel I can write a long article tomorrow.

That’s the thing with writing, if your brain is not ready, then no matter how you try, you can’t really force words to drip out of every orifice of your body. It’s like extracting blood out of stone.

Hopefully, I can finish the story tomorrow because our marketing team in Japan is ready to tweet it next week. Talk about pressure…

Meanwhile, today’s soundtrack is brought to you by Breaking Benjamin. I had been playing it while driving (to and from my hometown) so that I can keep myself awake.

Evil Angel

Hold it together
Birds of a feather
Nothing but lies and crooked wings
I have the answer
Spreading the cancer
You are the faith inside me

No
Don’t leave me to die here
Help me survive here alone
Don’t remember
Remember

Put me to sleep evil angel
Open your wings evil angel

I’m a believer
Nothing could be worse
All these imaginary friends
Hiding betrayal
Driving the nail
Hoping to find a savior

No
Don’t leave me to die here
Help me survive here alone
Don’t surrender
Surrender

Put me to sleep evil angel
Open your wings evil angel
Fly over me evil angel
Why can’t I breathe evil angel?

Put me to sleep evil angel
Open your wings evil angel
Fly over me evil angel
Why can’t I breathe evil angel?

This song, Evil Angel, sounds like it’s about substance abuse, which Ben Burnley has written extensively about in some Breaking Benjamin’s songs. He battled alcoholism for a while and he was almost a non-functional alcoholic. His health issues today are a result of his battle with the the bottle. Dear Agony album’s cover was Ben’s brain scan after he was diagnosed with “wet brain” or Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome due to alcohol abuse.

More than the heavy guitar riffs, what attracts me to Breaking Benjamin are the melodies and the relatable words, which echo in your mind especially if you have suffered from depression and substance abuse. Lucky are the people who did not have to suffer such things. They shouldn’t judge because they have no idea how we survivors are able to get out of our hellhole. They have no idea how it is to live without proper sleep for months…in my case, two years. It’s kind of sad that the only respite I had then was Covid.

I first listened to Breaking Benjamin when I still didn’t have kids. Then “I Will Not Bow” became my anthem while I was trying to keep myself together while my girls were battling with life and death in the ICU.

After going through the difficult recent two years, I could relate more to BB’s songs. Thanks to therapy, my faith, and friends, I got past it.

Forward march

My kids and I welcomed 2023 with our neighbors and we shared sparklers, fountains and fire crackers.

It’s kinda bittersweet. This is the last new year’s eve with the neighbors. Photo by CallMeCreation.com

My girls enjoyed the evening, which was capped by viewing the fireworks of central QC from our neighbor’s roofdeck.

So for 2023, we will be embarking on a new adventure… Sort of. We’re going back to the place where my girls were born and where I grew up. Very familiar ground and yet it’s full of uncertainties. I will be in danger of making my world smaller because I will be back to my old stomping grounds. I’m in danger of regressing and throttling the growth that I had painstakingly nurtured. I’m scared of stunting.

But I’m doing this for my kids. They will benefit from growing up in a more protected and unpolluted environment. They’re now the priority, it’s no longer about me.

I say, I need to go forward, march to the tune of the band, and hope for the best. This new year will be a transition period for me, not only because I’m moving houses; I feel there’s a bigger shift that’s going to happen. I don’t know what exactly that is.

I’m out of therapy for 6 months now and 2023 will be a new start for me. I’ve been held back for two years and it was like I was loitering around purgatory longer than I should.

What will I be targeting to do this year?

  • More diving; it will be easier since travel time will be cut because I would already be in the south
  • Learn kiteboarding in Boracay
  • Go to Moalboal or Coron
  • Go surfing in Siargao, La Union, Zambales, or Baler.
  • Go camping again with my kids either in Caliraya again or Tanay, Rizal
  • Prepare for travel to Morocco or Spain in 2024; in the meantime I will bring my kids and mom to Singapore since it’s the easiest place when I have a brood to herd.
  • Travel to the Bangkok, Hi Chi Minh, and Phnom Penh for work.
  • Push for promotion of my two or three reporters
  • Build my small homestead
  • Start court proceedings for my annulment as I’m already out of therapy. I can finally battle it out in court

I’m sleepy.

The cold has bothered me

❄️ It’s cold here because of the breeze coming from the lake. ❄️🌨️ And we’re at the foot of the mountain.

This morning at 6 am, I cleaned the cat litter box, refilled it with fresh litter, filled up my cats’ drinking fountain, filled their plates to the brim with kibbles, and off I went to drive south.

No cars! Photo by CallMeCreation.com

Since today was declared by the governent to be a non-working holiday, people opted to stay where they were. This meant no private vehicles! Wohoo!

All the way to the south, still no cars!

It only took me less than 1.5 hrs to reach my mother’s house. I then checked my house, which was devoid of workers since it’s a public holiday.

I edited some articles from China this morning until my kids were ready to leave at around 1 pm. We first went to a local park because I wanted to show the girls the former lake port where I boarded the ferry 🛥️ that whisked me away from my hometown to Guadalupe, Makati when I was in college. Because I wanted a more adventurous commute to Metro Manila. 😜 I did that several times when I had to go to UP Diliman.

Since there was no other editor around, I picked up more stories from China and India for editing. 😑 My kids and their cousins had played in the hotspring pool while I slaved away.

They turned off the hotspring valve but the pool is still warm. However, I’m not enticed to dip because I’m cold.

I’ll just wake up early to have a dip when the pool man turns on the hotspring valve. Before I start to edit again. 😑
